you think the boys could have pulled off sympathy for the devil?

and how about Jer doing it? the song kinda fits Bobby much more but i wouldn't be as interested. as we all know the fat man could do amazing things with all sorts of covers - any thoughts on this one?

Uh fellows, the trip was over a long time ago, Don't you think it's time to get back to NOW? I think Jerry and the boys were all about the NOW. And guess what? They ain't comin' back to do ANY covers.

omg--they are geniuses--i am just now discovering their early stuff--preWhip It

i did not earlier realize how great their lyrics were/are &
how they are satirizing so much about culture & music & human behaviors!! they are sort of like musical Yes Men

That's a great analogy - musical yes men...

Can't vouch for audio quality of clip because my sound is off

We got to meet Mark Mothersbaugh because he's doing a solo art show at our gallery in June. Super nice guy and been around a bit (and probably made more, more money off the Rugrats than ever did off DEVO). http://www.thealternativecafe.com/shows.php

My favorite DEVO? http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xf7v7p_devo-neil-young_music

A local GD tribute here in town used to do it some years back. But they only did it when Devon Allman sat in, and he handled the vocals. For a while there it seemed like Devon was always sitting in every week, and he got into a big Stones cover phase for a while (Beast of Burden was the other big one, and he does a great Miss You). I always liked it, and found it a welcome addition to a set. The crowd always got into the "whoo hoo" thing.

I'll see your lame Beatles covers and raise you some horrible Who covers

Here's a strange one - have you heard any Waybacks with Bob Weir sitting in? They do Kashmir and freakin Weir nails it! Say what you will about Bobby rock star and Robert Plants over the top rock goddness ( yeah i know it's not a word or is it? )but they actually do a great job of it

if they woulda done it, I think it shoulda been early with Pig on vocals... a real nasty blues arrangement with funk so thick you could cut it with a knife

They would never even consider Sympathy - after Altamont - Thats what New Speedway was all about.....

Plus there was already enough darkness around the edges of the GD trip without provoking it. If you dont know what I mean - you were wearing rose color glasses.

Do you really see Garcia singing a tune about Satan? Honestly? He wouldn't even mention God in an interview for fear of lunatic followers would read a message into it.

The boys loved the Beatles and Stones, that doesn't mean they were gonna cover a song just because they wrote it. They pick their spots, same as Dylan tunes.

A lot of people on this board think the Dead would make anything sound good, but if you listen to a lot of the covers, especially the Beatles and Stones covers, they are poorly performed.

And the point about darkness has nothing to do with songs about darkness but the dark side of the scene. If you didnt or dont think there was a LARGE dark side in the wings, you weren't there or blinded by the "Peace and Love" on the few occasions you caught a show.

Ask anyone who lost loved ones to dope, drink or recklessness of all kinds which the scene heavily ignored in the mantra of "Freak Freely".

Agree completely Zimmer... those were dark days indeed. Lots of blame to go around for a poorly organized festival.

And I totally agree, a lot of those covers, especially later on, are unlistenable.

I'd have to second those who are saying that, based on some of their dreadful covers of other 60s Brit bands, I'm glad they never tried.
